Same-day shipping race begins in 2014

Shipping Management

The 2013 holiday season made one thing readily apparent: the convenience of shopping online is only an advantage when orders arrive when they’re supposed to. There was a significant amount of finger-pointing and blaming among both merchants and shipping companies when a number of holiday purchases didn’t arrive on time to customers.

In 2014, many merchants are looking into doing what they can to eliminate this sore spot. Several industry leaders, including Google, eBay and Amazon, continue to invest in discovering ways of expediting the order fulfillment and delivery process to get items to customers as soon as possible, with the goal of executing same-day shipping. Even if retailers don’t sell goods through these marketplaces, the fact that the bar is being raised means they need to step up their efforts as well.

“In 2014, plan to see more companies join the same-day shipping race by offering these services in more cities,” Multichannel Merchant predicted. “These programs will likely find fans among errand-runners. Need to pick up groceries or a prescription, but don’t have time? That’s where same-day shipping will come in handy.”

For retailers, the rise of same-day shipping will put greater stress on their eCommerce operations. When an order comes in, they must be able to quickly process the purchases and package the item while accounting for inventory, payments, and ensuring they have all the correct information. Retailers must also ensure they have the right relationships with third-party logistics companies to provide same-day shipping to their customers.

Opening new warehouses and distribution centers can help expedite the process, but just as importantly, it’s also crucial that retailers streamline their warehouses operations to make the picking and processing part as timely as possible.
