Mobile eCommerce doesn’t just include smartphones

Industry News

When many merchants think of mobile Commerce, they think of smartphones – they design apps and optimize their websites for these devices. The mindset is that people often use these handheld gadgets to aid with shopping when they are in store or on the run, so merchants place a priority on reaching these individuals.

However, as a new study from Javelin discovered, it’s important for retailers to remember that mobile Commerce is about more than just smartphones. The other half of the equation – tablets – account for a substantial portion of mobile Commerce sales. In fact, according to Javelin’s in-depth report, the iPad and other similar mobile devices account for more than half of mobile Commerce sales in 2013.

“The portion of commerce generated through tablets is fueled by rising device ownership, as ownership of mobile devices doubled since 2012,” the study noted. “As tablet ownership rates continue to grow, these devices are expected to serve as an increasingly dominant purchasing channel. Creating tablet-optimized shopping experiences through the app and browser should be a top priority for merchants and other parties looking to capitalize on the growth of mobile online payments.”

With more retailers including mobile Commerce into their retail mix, it’s also growing increasingly important they are using eCommerce software to manage customer profiles, inventory and order management tasks across channels as well. Mobile devices can create a new dynamic and improve the shopping experience, but it’s crucial that this channel is integrated with the brick-and-mortar and online shopping experience to deliver on the full omnichannel promise.
